Why Digital Learning and Digital Education

The question is often asked why digital education in classrooms? The answer is the change in lifestyle. Take a closer look at our lifestyle and how it has changed from when we were in school. Remember hand written letters to parents, friends and posting them? Playing in the locality park after school? Compare it with todays life than you will find that everything has changed. The playground has shifted to mobile apps, internet search, its all about smartphones, Mobile Learning, internet, playstations and xbox. We depend on technology for almost everything we do, without even realizing it.

The question we should be asking is how well do we really know our children? Do we know how they communicate, get information, socialize or how they like to learn? Research shows that 21 century childrens attention span has dropped significantly compared to their previous generation. So when their minds and imagination is constantly stimulated and engaged through technology, it becomes increasingly difficult for teachers to hold their attention in a traditional classroom. A text bred teacher teaching a, tech bred student, will never see eye to eye. The teacher will not be able to comprehend the requirements of a tech bread student.

Learning Styles And Multiple Intelligences

Learning styles and multiple intelligences play a huge role in the success of college students today. “changes and advances in technology have led many educators to reconsider traditional, uniform instruction methods and stress the importance of considering student learning styles in the design and delivery of course content”(Romanelli et al., 2009). In order to prepare students for their online college career Baker College has created a course called “College Success Online”. This course introduced the concept of the three learning styles and the seven multiple intelligences in order to increase the students awareness of how they best learn and which of the multiple intelligences are their strongest. This is done by having the students complete two surveys entitled, Learning Styles Inventory and Multiple Intelligences Inventory.

The three learning styles are; “Visual Learners: learn through seeing”, “Auditory Learners: learn through listening”, “Tactile/Kinesthetic Learners: learn through, moving, doing and touching” (LdPride, n.d.). The result of my Learning Styles Inventory suggests that my strength lies within the Auditory Learning category. I still scored relatively high in the Visual Learners category and find it most difficult to learn through moving, doing, and touching. However, I did find the results to be balanced in regards to my learning styles as there was only a one or two point spread between the categories.

The next survey was in regards to Multiple Intelligences which are broken down into seven categories; “Visual/Spatial Intelligence: ability to perceive the visual, Verbal/Linguistic Intelligence: ability to use words and language, Logical/Mathematical Intelligence: ability to use reason logic and numbers, Bodily/Kinesthetic Intelligence: ability to control body movements and handle objects skillfully, Musical/Rhythmic Intelligence: ability to produce and appreciate music, Interpersonal Intelligence: ability to relate and understand others, Intrapersonal Intelligence: ability to self reflect and be aware of one’s inner state of being”(LdPride, n.d.). Out of these seven categories I scored highest in both Logical and Intrapersonal intelligences which explains my pursuit of a technical degree in computer science. My weakest category was in Interpersonal Intelligence which was what I had originally projected as my weakest since part of my personality type is a conditioned mildly expressed extrovert.

Ultimately, being aware of Learning Styles and Multiple Intelligences will have a direct impact on success in college. For me, understanding that I learn best by both by audio and visual means allows me to utilize techniques such as reading aloud or taking notes to ensure that I can absorb as much information as possible. Also, understanding my weakness in interpersonal intelligence allows me to be more cautious when dealing with people as well as take part in activities such as group discussion and communication courses that will further develop my skill in regards to that category.

The Benefits Of Learning English

I wonder how many people would want to know the benefits of learning English. Before I give you ten reasons why one should learn English, I know you could come up with twenty more reasons for learning English. Such is the popularity of English. Many would say that hankering for English is nothing but a colonial hangover and that we are succumbing to the hegemony of English. But we cannot deny that none of the other foreign languages have been able to reach the level of acceptance that English has reached. No other language to date has been regarded as an international language, bar English.

A research study by the British Council says that English has official status in at least seventy-five countries with a total population of over two billion. More than 750 million people speak English as a foreign language and it is believed that speakers of English as a second language could very soon outnumber those who speak it as a first language.

Let us see the benefits of learning English. Firstly, one can access any sort of information from any place (be it books, media, internet) with the help of English. This is because almost everything gets written down in English. Over a billion web pages are in English. Magazines and newspapers that are in English are the only ones that can be downloaded in any part of the world. Its a good idea to learn English professionally by enrolling in an English school in England or any other place where English is widely used.

When it comes to academia, English is yet again beneficial. Knowing English is extremely important for a successful academic career. Many people know at least two languages. Such people can easily opt for the role of a translator by translating text in their regional languages and vice versa. Almost all the canonical texts have been translated in English. So if you know English you can read almost all the great works in literature. And who wouldnt want to read William Shakespeare, Lord Byron, John Keats, P.B. Shelly or John Milton? The list of names of such stalwarts of English literature would be unending.
Hollywood films are also in English and watching a film by looking at the subtitles takes away half the excitement and fun. In this context also, English is a winner.

ESL-Languages is a prominent language school in the world. It helps people to learn English abroad. Knowing a language is definitely beneficial, but knowing English goes beyond the notion of being beneficial. It is a necessity and a must for everyone. With ESL Languages, a person has the liberty to learn English in England or to learn English in USA.

Imagine You Are Learning Chinese Online

Most people, when given the task of learning Chinese, run to the closest bookstore for an instruction manual. But this is probably the worst thing you could do! A much better choice is learning Chinese online, where you can hear the language spoken and repeat what you heard. Learn Chinese online, and you’ve got a great foundation for success.

Why is hearing Chinese spoken so essential to learning it? In English, words are composed of consonants and vowels. Cat means cat, no matter how you pronounce it. But in Chinese, saying “ma” in one tone of voice means “mother”; in another tone of voice, it means “horse.” By learning Chinese online, you can listen to native speakers pronounce phrases accurately, and you have the opportunity to match your tone to theirs.

How do you get down learning Chinese online? Here are five strategies to help you get started.

1. Choose a proven Chinese language program. Clearly, you need to find one that emphasizes listening and repeating Chinese words and phrases. You want one in which the teachers speak Chinese as a first language, but are comfortable with English as well. And you want a program that offers a variety of approaches to suit the needs of students with different learning styles, because everyone does not learn Chinese online in just the same way.

2. Set aside a scheduled time to practice learning Chinese online. Some of us are dawn people; some of us are night-owls. But we are all people of habit. If you establish a study routine, you’ll see quicker results.

3. Listen to the conversations carefully, and match your accent to that of the native speaker in your program. Accent is vitally important in Chinese, since a fluctuation in tone can change the whole meaning of the word or phrase. Don’t worry about being overheard by your friends or family – in order to learn Chinese online, speaking aloud is mandatory.

4. Don’t neglect any part of your language-learning package. If your program comes with educational games, play them. If there are quizzes, take them; if there are additional resources, use them. The more you engage with your lesson package, the faster you’ll be able to learn Chinese online.

5. Now that you’re learning Chinese online, practice it offline! Unless you live in a very stranded area, there are likely to be some Chinese speakers living within a sensible distance. Seek them out and talk to them! They’ll be thrilled to hear your earnest attempts to speak their language, and it will do wonders for your conversational skills.

What’s your next step? Choose a full-featured Chinese language-learning program from the many highly-rated ones you’ll find on the Internet. Devise a study strategy that works for you and resolve to care for your online Chinese lessons as seriously as you would any university course. Before you know it, you’ll be learning Chinese online!

Latent Learning

LATENT LEARNING

Learning is acquiring new or modifying knowledge, behaviours, skills, values, or preferences and may involve synthesizing different types of information. Learning is broadly classified into two types namely Simple non-associative learning and Associative learning. Latent learning is a form of learning which comes under the category of Associative learning. This type of learning is not eventually expressed immediate to its gain of knowledge neither expressed in an open manner. Latent learning is that which one cannot see until there is some incentive to exhibit it.

This type of learning may not be given prior importance but one should understand the difference between learning and performance. For example, two friends may go to work in the same vehicle and the latter is driving all the time. The other person may gain the knowledge to drive the vehicle just by observing but may not have exhibited his knowledge. Only when certain emergency situation may occur the importance of latent learning is demonstrated. Early behaviourists doing research in the first part of the 20th century, such as Clark Hull, O. H. Mowrer and Edward Thorndike maintained the reinforcement in the form of punishment or reward was necessary for the learning of voluntary behaviours to occur.

An experiment conducted by Edward C Tolman and C.H. Honzik on latent learning provided some of the first evidence that reinforcement is not necessary for learning to occur. They provided one of the finest
and well known examples for latent learning. Latent learning often shows up in everyday life. Positive reinforcement causes one to perform for the first time a behaviour which has already been learned. Latent learning is given the name from the word latent which means existing but previously unknown. Latent learning on the other hand have disproved some of the basic assumptions of the early theories of operant conditioning.

Learning that is not demonstrated by behaviour at the time it is held to take place but that is inferred to exist based on a greater than expected number of favourable or desired responses at a later time when reinforcement is given is known as Latent learning. It is a learning that is not the result of determined effort and is not evident at the time it occurs, but remains latent until a need for it arises.

A famous quotation by Elizabeth Bishop on latent learning is stated as follows I have seen it over and over, the same sea, the same, slightly, indifferently swinging above the stones, icily free above the stones, above the stones and then the world.
